It heats a mat or cartridge containing a pyrethroid-family repellent (the rechargeable E-series uses metofluthrin), vaporizing it into a low-concentration cloud that forms a protection zone of roughly 15–20 feet. Mosquitoes entering the zone are repelled or knocked down before they reach you. Nothing goes on your skin, there's no scent you'll notice, and no open flame like citronella coils. The mechanism is legitimate. This repellent class is well studied and it meaningfully reduces landings and bites within the zone.
Does Thermacell work in wind?
This is its biggest weakness, and in South Florida it matters. The protection zone is a cloud of vaporized repellent: a steady breeze pushes the cloud downwind and thins it, and an ocean or lake breeze can effectively erase it. On a still evening in a screened or sheltered patio it performs close to its best case. On a breezy dock or open pool deck, expect a fraction of the advertised zone, or bring a spatial backup: picaridin on skin works regardless of wind.
Does Thermacell work on no-see-ums?
Partially at best. Thermacell's own marketing targets mosquitoes; biting midges (no-see-ums) are less reliably repelled, and coastal South Florida users often report continued no-see-um bites inside the zone. If your patio problem is no-see-ums rather than mosquitoes (check the bite pattern, tiny welts around ankles and hairline at dawn/dusk) a Thermacell alone will disappoint. Fine-mesh screening and picaridin on skin are stronger plays for midges.
Is a Thermacell safe to use around food, kids, and pets?
Follow the label: run it outdoors or in well-ventilated spaces, and Thermacell advises against direct contact with food while operating. The vaporized dose is very low, and metofluthrin products are widely sold for exactly this patio use case. Pyrethroids are toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates, don't run one directly over the koi pond, and cats are more sensitive to pyrethroid-class compounds than dogs, so placement and label-reading matter in a cat household.
